Enrique Flores is one of the most prolific Mexican artists of his generation. Of course having been mentored by the late great master of Mexican art, Rodolfo Morales, hasn’t hurt; nor has the fact some of Oaxaca’s most prominent art galleries have served as his patrons for many years. But there’s no substitute for hard work, talent, vision and philanthropy. Continue reading Oaxacan Artist Enrique Flores Shines with Philanthropy

Cross-Border Collaboration Aids Efforts in Coastal Oaxaca to Sterilize Street Animals, Enhance Pet Care
It’s a commonplace that Mexico is overrun with stray and starving dogs and cats—while no reliable sources have ventured to guess at how many, an animal rescue organization in the Yucatan has used tourism research to estimate that over 4,000,000 Americans won’t visit Mexico because they’re appalled at the situation. El Sueño Zapoteco Bacaanda Foundation Update
One of the most active charities in the Huatulco area, El Sueño Zapoteco/Bacaanda Foundation is helping communities build schools in the rural, and providing educational materials for the classroom. As has been discussed in previous issues of the Eye, El Sueño Zapoteco has for several years been actively involved in improving the lives of the rural communities surrounding Huatulco. Initially working to provide dental health care and educational materials to these communities, the focus changed last year following devastating tropical storms. Many schools were lost, and El Sueño Zapoteco rededicated its purpose to building and repairing schools, and providing much needed materials to these schools. This includes what we take for granted as a part of any school: paper, pencils, colors, notebooks, literature books, and playground equipment. How to Buy Happiness!
Can MONEY buy you HAPPINESS? It appears so, as long as you are spending that money on others and not yourself.
A study has found that people feel happier when they give a little of their earnings to others. Michael Norton, a professor at Harvard, and Lara Atkin and Elizabeth Dunn at the University of British Columbia in Canada, did a number of different studies to determine how happiness happens, and if spending money on others increases that happiness. Jewish Charities in Mexico
By Marcia Chaiken and Jan Chaiken
Almost everyone knows about the Ten Commandments. Fewer people know that they are just a small subset of six hundred and thirteen commandments in Judaism believed to be handed down by God at Mount Sinai. And among these commandments are many that obligate adherents to take care of vulnerable people, including widows, orphans, and those living in poverty. The Hebrew word that describes these types of obligations is tzedakah, which loosely means “charity”. Continue reading Jewish Charities in Mexico
Yes, You Need to Give in Mexico. In Fact, You Need to Give MORE!

It’s the end of the year, and this issue’s theme is (what else?) giving. If you haven’t started receiving year-end appeals from every organization you’ve ever come in contact with, you must have been on Mars for a year or two! Music and Sweet Treats
What does The Blues have in common with home made cookies? Both are a means to help Huatulco’s disabled children through Un Nuevo Amanecer (A New Dawn—UNA).
For the past several years Huatulco’s residents and tourists have reveled to the sound of The David Rotundo Blues band and 2015 will continue this tradition. In fact three benefit concerts are planned for this season with the following tentative dates in mind: January 9, February 6 and March 6. Although the location is still under negotiation the venue will definitely be in the open air. If you are in Huatulco for these dates this is an event not to be missed! Music’s BFF in Huatulco: Carminia Magaña and Amigos de la Música de Huatulco
Since practically the minute Carminia Magaña set foot in Huatulco, Amigos de la Música de Huatulco has been enchanting audiences from across the municipio of Santa María Huatulco with concerts, performances, and art events. An accomplished painter herself, the petite, silver-haired dynamo arrived in Bahias de Huatulco in 1998. Having lived in Mexico, Europe, and the United States, she was looking for the kinds of cultural activities she had always used to fully experience particular places and people wherever she was. Snipsisters- Four Years and Going Strong!
Heidi Wagner and Shelagh O’Brien, aka The Snipsisters are returning once again to the Huatulco area to host spay/neuter clinics for dogs and cats. Over the past 3 years, hundreds of animals in Cuatunalco and surrounding communities- Coyula, Barra La Cruz, and Zimatan- have been sterilized free of charge because of the fundraising efforts in Canada. Veterinarians from Pets for Life, an organization out of Puerto Vallarta, work endless hours to do at least 30 surgeries each a day at the clinics (and the record, 45, last year in Cuatunalco!!).
