Dante Allier Martinez is one happy little boy. Even though he was born without ears he has always been a cheerful, well-adjusted child. His parents, who take good care of him in Santa Maria Huatulco, never tried to hide his deformity by growing his hair to cover the missing parts. I have a cockatoo, Juliette, and she has this amazing ability to see a good person from across the room. If you believe in angels, you will find some of them work at Clinica de Autismo /DIF here in Huatulco. I have had the fortunate experience of volunteering for them the last few months and let’s just say that the DIF staff have received Juliette’s approval. The Bacaanda Foundation, also known as El Sueno Zapoteco (The Zapotec Dream), has “embarked” on a multifaceted project to showcase the artisanal skills of Zapotec craftspeople. The Foundation’s Ark floats on the tile floor of its workshop and gallery in Tangolunda. Christened in March 2012, the Ark is now populated by almost a hundred pairs of animals created from natural materials gathered by Zapotec villagers of Santiago Xanica and its three agencias (sub-villages) in the municipio of Miahuatlan, in the Sierra Sur region of Oaxaca. Four years ago Juana, a resident of Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca’s main rug village, was earning virtually nothing selling the odd bottle of soda pop or package of gum out of her family’s narrow, halfempty storefront. Today, with the assistance of small, interest-free loans facilitated through $50 USD donations from tourists visiting Oaxaca, she earns a decent living as the proprietor of a handicrafts store filled with colorful handwoven wool rugs, tapestries and handbags. Un Nuevo Amanacer (UNA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping disabled children of the Huatulco region for the past fifteen years. They provide ongoing therapy to about 110 children annually; assisting with problems which include hearing and speech impairment, neurological and cognitive disorders, and a variety of physical disabilities.
