Update for Blues on the Beach

By Brooke Gazer

For the past five years “Un Nuevo Amanecer” has been able to continue helping disabled children in the region of Huatulco by raising funds through an event called “Blues on the Beach”, featuring David Rotundo’s blues band and organized by Dan Thompson. This year’s events exceeded expectations with 580 people attending in January and 650 in February. The donations from these two evenings will cover all the expenses for the foundation for six months. The parents and staff at UNA work very hard to make these events successful and appreciate the support that they receive from the community at large. It is obvious by their support that the community enjoys this event so it is a “Win Win” for everyone!

Art As Liberation: The Mexican Women of Surrealism

By Carole Reedy

There is irony embedded in a discussion of the women artists of the surrealism era, since at surrealism’s core lies the idea of women as objects of desire and mystery, and the worship of them as stereotypes and sexist norms. Even in the 1920s, surrealism expressed an archaic view of women. In addition, male surrealists lacked respect for female artists, and the women had to work hard to refute it. The First Dance

Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 12.58.17 PMBy Leigh Morrow

My first dance partner was my father. The dance lessons started in earnest when I was around five or six years of age. I vividly remember climbing barefoot onto the tops of my father’s shiny brown oxfords, and as he clasped my tiny wrists and in 4/4 time, transported me on the top of those polished shoes through the long continuous movements of the foxtrot around and around the living room rug, while the record player spun Frank Sinatra’s “I’ve got you under my skin”. Musings on (a poster of) the Feather Dance, Tourism, and Authenticity

Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 12.58.32 PMBy Deborah Van Hoewyk

This is a vintage travel poster for Oaxaca, or at least a reproduction thereof. I bought it because I liked the colors, because it promoted Oaxaca in bright marigold yellow, my favorite of those colors, and because it had those weird little Keane-like kids down in the corner, staring at the dancers with their very big eyes. Mexican Folk Dance

Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 12.58.54 PMBy Marcia Chaiken and Jan Chaiken

If you haven’t seen folk dance in Mexico, you haven’t seen Mexico. While many of us raised north of the border were taught the Mexican hat dance in elementary school, the version we learned is only a pale imitation of the dances that are entrenched in the culture of cities, towns and villages throughout Mexico. Specific dances vary from state to state and region to region, but in general Mexican folk dance encompasses joyous music with a heart-like beat, bright costumes (almost always including distinctive head gear), extremely fast foot work and a simple but charming story. Oaxacan Artist Enrique Flores Shines with Philanthropy

Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 12.59.10 PMBy Alvin Starkman M.A., J.D.

Enrique Flores is one of the most prolific Mexican artists of his generation. Of course having been mentored by the late great master of Mexican art, Rodolfo Morales, hasn’t hurt; nor has the fact some of Oaxaca’s most prominent art galleries have served as his patrons for many years. But there’s no substitute for hard work, talent, vision and philanthropy. Continue reading Oaxacan Artist Enrique Flores Shines with Philanthropy

Dedicated to Dance

Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 12.59.45 PMBy Brooke Gazer

Teresa Sanchez is one of several interesting professionals who have chosen to call Huatulco home. When the prima ballerina from Puebla accepted the position of principal dancer and choreographer for the Barceló Hotel she planned to spend a couple of years before moving on. However, she was seduced by the agreeable climate and gorgeous beaches and twelve years later not only is she a permanent resident she is an important asset to the community. Cosmopolitan Calle Chacah: Home to La Crucecita’s Underground Art Scene

Not to mention the film scene, the music scene, the environmental scene . . .

Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 11.28.43 AMBy Deborah Van Hoewyk

It’s Friday morning, December 12, the Day of the Virgin of Guadelupe. A heavy iron bell at the church of Nuestra Senora clangs once. Silence, then a clamour of clangs, calling people in for services. At Casa Tilcoatle, which houses the Tilcoatle Collective (Colectivo Tilcoatle), a few blocks away at Calle Chacah 410, a different belief is calling, a holistic commitment to art, culture, and education as the means to “provoke reflection on our society and the environment.” (The name comes from the Nahuatl words til “black” and coatl “snake,” and is thought to indicate either the black king snake or the indigo snake, non-venemous native snakes of the Colubrid family.)
